Chop Chop!

For this Mantic Games Salamander, I thought it would be fun to use the traditional turquoise color scheme that we have all seen on the GW Lizards for many years.

Ironically enough, I only painted one Skink/Kroxigor unit in that turquoise color scheme.

I have been trying to come up with a very different set of colors on each of these Salamanders, to show how the same figures can look radically different with a simple change in palette!

Stay tuned for the last of the two handed weapon versions... this guy will have some nice OSL on him!

Red Sonjia

Here's another Red Box Games warrior for you.  It's got the same red tunic as the other "elite" warriors, as these more heavily armored warriors have been designated.

Any time that you bring in that sort of a color with snow base treatment, there is a direct challenge in balancing that very warm color with that snow.  The red has to be "cooled down" as a result.

That works out for the best, as in the effort to cool down the reds, you are also muting them.  Blues and greens were used to shade the red in those shadow areas.

That also kept the colors from getting to vibrant... too warm.  It's important to keep in mind that the overall environment that the figure is standing among will help you make a lot of your color choices!

Wolf's Bane, part 2

This is the second of the four new Wereshewolves from Raging Heroes.  All of them were quite amazing to paint, allowing me to try all kinds of interesting new color combinations.

The first wolf that I posted was in mostly cooler colors, as if to represent the figure walking around in moonlight.  As you know, I like to try new things all the time, so warm colors carry the day for this wereshewolf.

The dramatic posing means that I can do some very fun basing as well.  Bark and branch is a perfect method for matching the bits of rock that come attached to most of the set, and telling a story with the base.

Of course, the next wereshewolf is painted in yet another color scheme, so stay tuned!!

A Ghost of the Past

Here's one more Army of the Dead!

It's very fun to put the finishing touches on some of these figures, which have been sitting in a box nearly 80% painted for a very long time.

Just like the first couple of figures, I tried to vary the glowing colors.  Some sections are more greenish, but others tinted more blue.

I also added the semi-opaque glaze of the rusty brown shade, which was mixed with Vallejo flesh wash to get it down into all the crevices.

For an eternally cursed army, they are a lot of fun!

Gurrier Du Senegal

This is the first color test figure of the Bolt Action Senegalese, which will form the backbone of the French army.

The Tirailleur Senegalaise will be riding in Laffley transports and Lorraine Carriers.

There are a few uniform elements that I am hoping to be able to capture, but we shall see if the sculpts allow that...

Stay tuned for much more!!

Blood Brother

Here's one more peek at the last of the Dark Eldar Grotesques.

Just as with the previous versions, a lot of experiments were conducted.  Among these were some blood effects, where I combined Reaper liner paints and clear paints with Secret Weapon water effects.  This made even the much darker blood colors a little more transparent, but also more like a gel.

Balancing all these new blood effects with the use of the fluorescent paints for the first time was also very entertaining!

You can see a preview of one of my Painting Pyramid video series here.  This episode, called "Bloody Mess", covers a variety of techniques which I learned:

Frodo!

I recall painting this little Frodo figure many years ago... probably 2003, long before I even heard of Object Source Lighting.

It was very fun to try him again all these years later, armed with the fluorescent paints!

Sting definitely packs way more punch when it's glowing!!
