Every Rose Has its Thorns

Get off my lawn!!!

Over the years, I have used this guy as an example in many of my glazing classes... most recently at Reapercon.  The idea was to illustrate how simple applications of basic lighter colors could be shaded and tinted to any desired outcome rather easily.

It was during the creation of these classes that the technique evolved into taking those same super transparent glaze colors and mixing them with 'regular' paints, which then resulted in the semi-translucent colors that I rely on so heavily now.

A stand alone video was created for this technique, called "Glazing Away".  While each of the painting videos shows how this technique works, this one explores the mixing of those semi-translucent options much further.

I also used this figure in the Orc and Goblin skin color video, for obvious reasons! :-)

Knights of the Blood Rose

To augment my Lord of the Rings Galadrhim army, I used a few Reaper minis as special characters.

This was one of my Elf Captains for the Knights of the Blood Rose.

I had a very fun story for these elves, who refused to leave Middle Earth.  They were constantly fighting Easterings with their Khandish allies, who were my evil army.

The tree was removable so that I could use him in a game, and not worry about it getting in the way during a scrum!!

Flame Wars

The Sisters sure do have a penchant for setting things on fire!

This time we have one of the white robed Sisters, which was certainly a different color choice for me.

For the longest time, my white colors were always done a bit more to the warm side of things.  I thought it would be more fun to have them be more neutral, or almost cooler.  That would make my greens a little warmer by comparison, as well as any golds I might incorporate as well.

The view from above shows that the base follows the same green marble theme.  As an afterthought, the white robe shows up very nicely against the darker green.

Horns & Axes

I believe that this is a Reaper figure, but it is sculpted by Tre Manor, of Red Box Games fame.

I thought that I recognized the sculpting style of this, but I could not place it.  It seems that Tre sculpted this for Reaper miniatures back in the day.

I did the usual mixes of greens and glaze colors together in the shadow areas of the skin tones.

So, we add one more type of miniature to the vast winter wonderland commission horde :-)

Where's Snow White?

 

This post is a wee bit out of order, since one of the dwarf characters in these images has yet to get his own feature.  However, things have been jumbled up in a massive way this Holiday season!!

 

These guys are all from Siren Miniatures, a company which produces a very large amount of special character types... not just dwarves!

 

Now matter what you choose, you will get fantastic details that are a snap to prep and paint, just as these fellows were.  They will also be unique... whether it's the armor, weapons, posing, etc., they will certainly stand out.

 

The clearly defined shapes of the muscles, clothing and weapons meant that I could focus my attention more on subtle color transitions, instead of wondering what the heck I was trying to paint. :-)

 

I didn't want to get too elaborate with basing on these, so I stayed with bark for the most part.

 

On some of the characters, I went with more greens in the shadows of the skin tones, but on others I went with something a little more purple.

 

I believe those differences might show up better in this image.

Hard Penance

Here's something old school for you... some Sisters of Battle Repentia!

It's been fun trying out a few new things on these older figures.  I have been experimenting with a few different methods to extending blood drips and spatter.

This involves using the Liquitex heavy gel medium.
