Hiding in plain sight

So, with the final minis in hand at last, I needed to make some bases for the camouflage miniatures!

If you remember the post of Cathy's base, the plan was to use smaller versions of the bricks to make some desert walls...

After each brick is weathered, it is glued in place...

The levels are built up one by one...

The snipers were going to be more in a jungle setting, which would require something a little different.

I brought out some larger 'filler' ricks that I had picked up walking by a construction site.  I had never gotten a chance to use these on small bases before.

I had to position them a few times to be sure they would fit together.  The original plan was to make sandbags, but I thought this might work a bit better.

More rocks on the other side of the base...

As the glue was drying, I worked some more on the desert bases.

More bricks and more heavy duty road construction cork :-)

Add some fine gravel and Secret Weapon skulls...

Here is why I used rocks on these bases.  I wanted to sculpt some fern leaves, and it seemed to make more sense that they would grow over a natural rock formation.

More green stuff ferns, and another base made with the left over sculpey pieces from the earlier bases.  Never toss anything away!

The bases are just about complete.

Fireworks...

On this 4th of July, you can't have a post that is not on fire!

These are some of the Reaper Bones figures that I will utilize as the 3 swarms which the Spider Queen can pop out at the most opportune time! :-)

All primed and ready to go...

Starting with some yellow mixed with the fluorescent yellow.

Then a bit of the fluorescent orange...

Then some 'regular' blazing orange into that mix.

A bit more of the orange...

At this point, I start using some cavalry brown.  I try to create some cooler flows in the lava stream...

Then some blue black into that mix for the bits that have cooled down the most.

Same color on top as the base for the spider swarms.

I 'damp brushed' some lighter colors onto that...

Even a little brighter, knowing that I was going to do lots of glazing later.

After the first layers of glazing.  Now I will work back into the middle tones, and get the reflected orangey light on the rock surface.  I hope you all had a Happy Fourth!!

Thundering hooves...

Time for some individual shots of the chariot and the outrunners...

This really was a fun project.  While the chariot was somewhat similar to the GW style, it was a little easier to deal with.  I also enjoyed having real horses to paint :-)

Everything fit together so well.  I didn't have to squeeze things to fit on the base at all.

I definitely wished that the Tomb Kings chariots had this much space in the howdah for the driver and crew!

And finally the outrunners.

Well, hopefully there will be much more War Gods to come!!!

Asharah's Revenge... the unit and the ride.

Tonight we have Asharah, leader of my Dark Eldar army.  She is with her Incubus retinue, and their Venom.

Asharah is another hero figure from the Raging Heroes line.  She had a number of left over options for heads, weapons, and other decorative elements.

I was able to use many of these extra bits to convert some GW Kabal warriors into the Incubus retinue figures, as the scale was perfect.  I have a few posts detailing how those were made, which you can find in the Dark Eldar army section.

I had a lot of fun with the base of this Venom.  Those who saw the original posts know all about the homage to the "Crashed plane sculpture" that we love to make fun of outside Midway Airport. :-)

Here are some of the latest unlocks and stretch goal from the Raging Heroes Kickstarter, which is almost down to the final 36 hours!!!  I wonder if this shoudl be my Guardsman (or Guradswoman) Marbo...

Halfling snipers, anyone?  These will make fantastic Urchins on the mean streets of my Hive City!

Superfantastic Mecha!

An Ogryn you really don't want to mess with, especially on a bad hair day.

Seeing Red...

Here are some shots of the mini for the Raging Reds video.  As with the other videos on this kind of subject, the idea is to show as many ways to get varieties in a color as possible.

In this case, I tried to do many different reds... warmer, cooler, less saturated, and so on.  The parts of the armor that face upward have been made a warmer read, while surfaces facing towards the ground were lightened with a much cooler color.

Since I have been asked so many times over the years about how to lighten red without making it either blazing orange or chalky pink, I knew that this particular video had to be made.  That is why it was in the very first set. :-)
