What's old can definitely be new :-)

Hey folks!  More of the Kabal Warriors.  I have been very surprised at how much I enjoyed painting these.  I remember having a lot of fun combining the old and new kits so long ago when I first built them, but I figured that they would not be as interesting to paint as the Jetbikes, for instance.

That has really not been the case.  I have had all kinds of fun with these.  Ironically, the old style armor and clothes made it easier to put the crackling lava freehand on them.  The shoulder armor definitely made a nice big open surface.

I was glad that I had put all the extra spikey bits on them, since that allowed me to do more blood platter, keeping them a bit more in line with all the vehicles.  Having a variety of old and new splinter rifles was also fun, and kept me from going insane painting endless numbers of the same gun! :-)

Some images of completed Kabal Warriors.  I think I did a Work in Progress post or two, but now I am shooting pictures of the painted figs!

More to come!

The final conclusions... testing for 6th and Adepticon

When we last left our intrepid Dark Eldar, they had chosen to take advantage of the Night Fighting in the first turn by deploying everything to start the game.

As you saw, they had hustled over to the right side of the board, where some objectives were waiting.  On their left side, however, waited an awful lot of tough CSM units, including the Forgefiend.

On the first turn, I managed to roll nothing but 1's for all the enhanced cover saves, which rendered  the Cronos useless (again) and almost brought down the raider with the Grotesques.  I am starting to realize that against any sort of space marine armies, as much as possible stays off the board, and whatever is on will just hide as much as possible.

The jetbikes were safe over here for now, since they had turbo boosted, and they were in cover.  However, the dreaded Hell Drake was yet to arrive, as were 2 other units of Khorne CSM's.

This was the 'high point' for the Dark Eldar, as they killed a lone obliterator, and a few space marines.  Unfortunately, I had to mover everything I had to shoot at them into relatively open spaces, and that would make things ugly.

A Venom failed its save and crashed to the ground, killing 4 of the 5 Wyches inside.  The Cronos was shot down as well.

Both of the fliers showed up, so I knew that it was either now or never.  With the fly over capacity of the Hell Drake, I knew I was going to lose one of the vehicles.

In desperation, I tried to get the Archon's unit into the main unit of Khorne marines.  The spacing did not work out too well, and that was not the only thing.  The shooting by the Razorwing only killed a few marines, and dozens of other shots also did nothing.  So, they would be facing a mostly intact squad, even though half the army shot at them.

As you can see, many more CSM's were waiting behind the first squad, so this gambit was going to fail big time.  The Grotesques could not make the charge distance to that squad of Khorne marines, which meant disaster was imminent.

As expected, the Archon and the Incubi were completely wiped out.  I issued a challenge with Asharah, which was bypassed by Kharn, and taken by the unit champ instead.  Free to do what he wanted, Kharn killed all the Incubi by himself with no problem.

The next turn, the Hell Drake flew over the Razorwing, blowing it up.  The Grotesques were wiped out by shooting and assaults by the main Khorne squad and Kharn.  The Fiend shot down the Grotesque's Raider.

With things looking very bleak on the left, my hope was that the big jetbike squad could cut down the squad of space marines in the fortress.  This might have caused the big units of Khorne marines to head in that direction, since there was an objective worth 4 points sitting there, and the Jetbikes counted as a scoring unit in this scenario.

The big squad of jetbikes did execute that flyover on the CSM squad in the fortress.  Between the bladevanes, cluster caltrops, and the shooting from the other jetbike squad behind them, dozens of hits were inflicted on the small squad.  Sadly, only 3 marines were taken down.

That meant the big jetbike squad would be easily wiped out on the next turn.  The Raptors never even had a chance to arrive, as the game was done on turn 3.  Even if the CSM didn't fire a single shot for the rest of the game, they already had more than enough VP's to win.

If they did shoot, whatever was left of the Dark Eldar would have been blown away very quickly.

What we have learned about the Dark Eldar in this edition is that against non space marine armies (we did tests against Demons and Imperial Guard), this army can be quite deadly.

However, against anything with a 3+ save, you can forget it.  We tried everything, even doing some small little tests and "what if's" during and after the massacres, such as this latest debacle.  Nothing mattered, as DE weapons are quite useless against what the marines bring to the table.

Dark Eldar do really nasty stuff to low toughness, low save armies, but they fail in armor, shooting (both distance and AP), and even in combat, against those space marines.  I had a feeling this would be the case, but seeing it happen in front of you was less enjoyable.

So, let's hope that I only play against  low save armies at Adepticon!

On the other hand, if I play against marines every game, I will have plenty of time to relax between rounds!  If the dealer area in in the tournament room as it has been, I might actually get to check it out. :-)

Asharah's full retinue.

Now we have the entire unit of converted Incubi with the Archon Asharah.  As most of you already know, she is a multi part figure from Raging Heroes, with tons of options for heads and wargear.

Some of the unused wargear was used on the other Incubi.

The circukar energy field on Asharah's back gave me the idea for the Blood Star icon that has been painted on many of the vehicles.

Next up are some pictures of the Kabal Warriors... stay tuned!

Crash course in 6th Edition...

Well, this was another part of my 6th edition education.  We have tried to do various scenarios, missions, setups, etc., to get as much of the basic rules as possible.  It really has been basic, learning the warlord traits thing, the crazy objectives, so on and so forth.

It has not been the easiest of educations, especially trying to learn a whole new army at the same time.

For the most part, I hold as much of my stuff in reserve as I can.  This was my policy after having most  the army destroyed before my first turn, even though it was all either hidden completely or in cover.

In this instance, I had a warlord trait which let me choose night fighting on the first turn.  I thought it might be an advantage for me, given the aptitude of the Dark Eldar for such things, but that did not work out the way I thought it would.

I have the Archons venom, another venome with a unit of Wyches, the Cronos, and the Grotesque raider hidden to start the game.  The Cronos has either been shot down early or remained hidden for the entire game.  The idea of it passing out paint tokens like candy has not even come close to working out in any of the previous games.

I put the ravagers out there to begin as well, since being in cover, with night fight and skilled rider should help them survive!

The Kabal warriors took up residence in a fortification, and I hid the last venom over there as well.

As it turned out, I might have been better served to leave these guys where they were...

Now we see the opponent.  A CSM army led by Kharn, with lots of Khorne marines, a Forgefiend and a Hell Drake.

You can see most of the rest of them here...

As the game is about to begin, you can see the board layout.  This was the mission with the point value objective markers and fast attack counting as scoring.

I wanted to experiment with turbo boosting this game.  I did so with all the bikes and the Venom.  It was a student body right, moving towards a few objectives.

The other vehicles emerged from behind the building.  I had hoped that the NF and such would help me survive the CSM shooting on that first turn.

I knew that the CSM's had a bunch of stuff not on the board yet.  The Drake, the Khorne Raptors, and 2 more units of Khorne space marines.  I had hoped to isolate those as they came on the table, and wipe them out will all the fast stuff on my right side of the board.  Since the Jetbikes were scoring, I thought I could get those objectives plus the extra VP for linebreaker.

Stay tuned to find out what happened!!!

Colossal Monsters from Rothand Studios

Here is something that just arrived!  These are some huge... and I do mean HUGE... figures from Rothand Studios.  You have the gigantic Stone Golem shown above, and a truly monstrous treeman!

Here's another picture of the Golem.  He will be painted as if he is made from cooling lava.  Gonna be a blast!  I love the dynamic pose, and the sculpting will allow for all kinds of wonderful painting effects.

And now for that treeman.  Check him out!  The pieces fit together nicely (assembly instructions on the website... see the link below).  There are also two different faces which you can use!

Both figures come with really nice bases, as you can see in the images.  To give you an idea of size, the Golem is about 7 inches tall.  The bases are about 4" x 4".

I will be making blog posts to chronicle the preparation and painting of these guys!

Here is the link to their website:

Passing the 700,000 mark with some Incubi!

Here's the next set of converted Incubi figures.  Just as I did with all of them, I used Kabal Warriors, bits and plasticard to create them.

It is amazing to think how quickly the moment approaches when the blog reaches three quarters of a million views.  At the rate things go on a daily basis, that will be reached around the time of another milestone... Adepticon!

I will try to generate the same sort of posts that I did last year, although that will depend on how much internet access I have, and if I have enough time to process the images, etc.  The schedule is very different from last year, so we shall see.

If there are as many triple flyer lists as I suspect there might be, I may not have all that many images to process :-)

These next few images are of the unit Klaivex...

So, another hearty thank you to all who have helped make this crazy blog what it is!
