Leaping Lizards!!

More new stuff for you... this time, something for all us Blood Bowl fans!!!

I've played this game since at least the early 90's, and it's amazing to see all the fantastic new figures that are being created for our beloved game.

Thanks to RN Estudio, the Baton Rouge Lethal Lizards shall rise again, with their impressive array of Saurus, Skink, Krox and star players!!

These images show the actual figures, which are wonderfully cast in white resin.  The mould lines are absolutely minimal, and they are almost all one piece casts.

That's very important in this kind of game, where the figures take a beating in more ways than one.  The resin is resilient, and a very nice silky texture for painting.

Primed and ready for paint!  I am going to go back to the very beginning for me, and paint this like my original team.  This means that each player will be painted with different colors and markings.

I will see if I can find some of those original images, so that I can match them with these newest versions.  I am also looking forward to using lots of jungle vegetation, and some splashing swampy water.

 I will have to come up with an especially cool scheme for this big guy!  Definitely splashing water on the base as well...

The big guys are well designed, in that they are not so enormous that there is no room to place them in all the middle of the pitch scrums that will inevitably follow!

Alien Invasion!

Another little Grey Man for you tonight!  He is from the Boxed Set of Hired Hands of the Watchers.

Each Hired Hand box, no matter what faction it might be, contains ten figures, each one with a unique pose.  They are all on marked plastic sprues, and come with instructions to help you locate those pieces more quickly.

Just as I did with the last example, I tried to make the base be the primary color contrast.  In addition, I tried to have the green glow of the weapon tie both of those disparate elements together.

Lots of fun was had placing various shades of grey... some more teal/blue, others more purple or even brown in others.  I did an entire painting video called Shades of Grey, and I have been drawing on my experience in creating that video a lot as I paint these little guys!!

Skull and Hoof

 

OK... time for round two on the rebased undead Reaper cavalry.  This was the second figure that was used in the How to Paint Your Skeletons video.

 

It's great to see them on the new bases.  I always wanted to see what they would look like on a wider, more expansive base, so this is very fun!

 

I added a few more skulls to the base as well, which are from Secret Weapon Miniatures!

A Dynamite Lady

As you all know, my obsession for nearly two years has been finding all the new manufacturers who are creating so many spectacular figures for us lucky painters!

That list continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and soon Magic Reality Miniatures will be in person on this painting table as well.  I have some preview images for you here, starting with one Dynamite Lady!!

There are going to be a lot of fun details to render on this 32mm figure.  Better yet, I don't even have to sculpt my own gears for her to stand on!  It really completes the composition.

I think the face and filligre will be the two essential elements of this piece as I paint it.

I'm going to have to try to get some grease/oil effects in the mechanisms here.  Perhaps mixing Secret Weapon water effects with sewer water will give it that dirty amber shade, with a touch of glossiness and suspended particles.

Each of these concept art pieces has some fun color ideas, but I think I like the challenge of the browns and tans of the image on the left.

So, when the figures arrive from across the sea, I will show you the Unboxing as well.

Magic Reality Miniatures plan to maintain a regular release schedule, with new figures appearing for us very frequently.  Sounds great to me!!!!

Little Grey Men

They're here!!!  Yes indeed, little Grey Men from Wild West Exodus!!

Introducing the Watchers, one of four new factions that were part of the Unfinished Business kickstarter.

Incredibly, everything is 3 months AHEAD of schedule, so all of the kickstarter figures are available for regular pre order now on the Outlaw Miniatures website.

I had a lot of fun painting these guys.  I wanted to stick with the concept art as closely as possible.

Since the figure itself was going to have a variety of greys, mostly on the cooler side of the spectrum, I thought that I could provide some contrast by painting the base with lots of tan, browns, yellows, etc.

Even the Gamer's Grass tufts had to fit this setup.  I had been saving this very light colored version just for these little guys!

Angel of the Seas

Time for another experiment!!

Once again, I was able to scrounge up a very old mystery figure that was standing on top of this rock base I had made years ago.  I thought this would be as good a place as any to test out a new technique combining the vallejo/secret weapon glaze colors with the Liquitex Heavy Gel Medium.

In a previous use of the Gel Medium for water, I tried to mix in some 'regular' opaque blueish paint with the Medium to see what would happen.  Unfortunately, I ended up with blue paste which had hardly any transparency to it.  

It is very difficult to tell when you first mix that in with the Gel Medium, since it all very white and opaque anyway before it dries.

I was hoping that if I combined it was something that was already very translucent, I would be able to 'tint' the Gel Medium towards blue, green, etc.

While I had to wait several hours for the results, it all worked out exactly as I had wanted!!!

This opens up all sorts of new possibilities for other types of basing and interactive posing of figures splashing through rivers or swamps.

The most crucial aspect of the test was to see if I could create a style of water that would work with my 1/700 waterline diorama warships.  I think this will be absolutely perfect.  The gel is easy to acquire, so I won't have to worry about running out.

My next test will be to observe what happens when I mix in the fluorescent paints with the Gel Medium.  I might have something that creates lava flows in an instant!!

We shall see..

Leaves of Fury

Here's the third and final Raging Heroes Treekin, with foliage applied!

It's still amazing to see the difference that the foliage made.  These guys have so much motion and action to the poses.  They were dynamic poses to start with, but the leaves seem to enhance that.
