Land Raider Redeemer #1

Here are some photos of one of the Redeemers that I used at Adepticon this year.  I had loads of fun with the freehand on both of them.  On this vehicle, I did some Litanies of Hate on the top side. :-)  The cowlings of the flamestorm cannons presented an interesting opportunity to do a horizon line with an actual scene embedded within.  I had been itching to do something like it for years!

  2. Weeping Manly tears over the awesomeness of this piece; as always, your work is a joy an inspiration to behold.

If you don't mind, what technique do you use for your illuminations/script work?

Is it brush with paint/ink or do you use pens? I've noticed many going over to pens but I'm struggling to find one suitable, most seem to have waterproof ink that doesn't dry on acrylic and the permanents that do, don't have fine enough nibs.

  3. Thanks for all the kind words! Everything is done the "old fashioned" way, with my liner brushes. I guess that is the key. Liner brushes (as opposed to spotters) hold a great deal of paint and water, allowing for long smooth strokes.

Using my 5X magnifier for everything also helps a lot, especially for freehand! I also try to draw everything out first on a sheet of paper actual size, so that it can be planned out. All of the text on the top of the vehicle had to be done that way, since it is readable text, and not just 'greeking' as a printer's comp would be done.

One of my painting students referred to me as a "closet calligrapher", and she was right. My parents bought me a calligraphy set when I was 11 or 12 years old, and it was a blast. I guess I try to sneak that in whenever possible :-)

    1. Being Old I'm a big fan of "Old Fashioned" :)

Thanks for all those details on your technique, it's convinced me to stick to brushes but get some better ones and maybe adopt the magnifier as an aid (these eyes aren't getting any sharper) lol.

      Cheers.

  4. The Litanies of Hate are boss. Great job on this work of art. Where did you get that multi-melta turrent if I might ask?

  5. I believe it is a Forgeworld piece. It was more of a challenge to paint, and I had to rework the bottom of it to fit the turret... as opposed to the standard piece.

  6. YOU ARE A GOD AMONG MEN! Simply stunning! I have always loved great artwork and yours is simply the best I've ever seen. With me being at school and stuff I can't find the time to paint but I always have a look at your website to get my fix. I find painting like a drug, if I don't have it, I use someone elses to satisfy my cravings. A.K.A YOU. Have I said how much I love your work?... Yes... oh ok. On this particular model I really like the steady shading and rusted effects.

BTW I have said this before but it would be an honour if you had any spare time to check out my wargames club website. My profile on there is Crusad3r. And maybe check out the photos of the club members models. (most are painted by my Dad but I have my own wee section to myself under Rory! :)) the web address is www.northayrshirewargamesclub.com. Thanks.

    1. Hi,

You go into the CLUB PICTURES then you will see some of my models I painted recently, you can click on one of them or click on club members models on the left then head into Rory and you can see them all. (they aren't as good as yours though!) And from there you can see mine and my Dad's is under Ross. :) sorry about being so vague before.
