The past lives on...

This is a very interesting circumstance, as it is a figure that both Cathy and I worked on.

Cathy had painted it many years ago, but we didn't play any games (or RPG systems) in which it would actually be used.  It ended up on a shelf for a long long time.

I ran across it a few weeks ago, and applied a few 'modern' techniques to various sections, such as weathering on the base, etc.

Cathy remembered that it was a Chronopia figure called MourningWolf.

So, enjoy a piece of yesteryear and current day!

Final Charge

The Sidhe strike again, another fantastic Celtos figure by Kev White.

I had a lot of fun with the metals on this, mixing in that triple play of golds that I have mentioned a lot lately.  That is, mixing in lots of muted greens and purples.

When there is more surface to cover, such as this figure, I like to mix in a little orange/sienna.  That is a nice contrast to some of the teal colors that I will place in areas to create more 'sparkle'.  Again, contrast is not always about how light or dark a color is in relation to another, but also about its intensity and 'temperature'.

I will try to round up some older images of this figure that I painted long long ago, and see if I can create some side by side images :-)

Seeing Red

Something fun for you today... an Urban Mammoth Junker.  As soon as I saw these, I knew that they would be perfect for the Raging Reds painting pyramid video.

As you can see in this link, the figure here is the very same one that was painted in the video:

The idea behind the video was to illustrate how you can get a huge variety in your reds.  Warmer reds, cooler reds, and also grayed down vs. highly saturated colors.  A way to get more contrasts even in a limited palette.

Variety Pack

Tonight we have a basing variety pack for you.  The one thing they all have in common, of course, is that they were all made from Sculpey.

A few of these were created by carving texture in the baked clay, while the rocky base was done by pressing actual rocks into the unbaked clay.

I am still finding so many ways to work with sculpey on the bases.  Sometimes I am using press moulds like those from Happy Seppuku, or I am making my own textures.

Making the bases is very fun, but so is painting them!

My love of basing is the reason why there are a dozen basing videos in the Painting Pyramid series.

The Eye that Never Sleeps

It's been a while since you've seen a Mierce miniature, so here you go!

As I have mentioned many times with the Red Box Games, Warmmachine and even these Mierce miniatures, they are all part of one vast project.  This means that colors must be unified across all these figure lines, which has been a significant challenge.

It's not just the snow bases... it involves all the armor, the cloaks, and even straps and shields!

Stay tuned for much more!

Breed Standard

This was an ancient figure that was languishing in obscurity for well over ten years.  I knew that I wanted to put some kind of banner on it, but I was saving it for a Slaine campaign, and I wanted to make sure I put the right design on it.

The banner itself if a piece heavy paper that was soaked in elmer's glue and water.  This would make it flexible enough to 'pose', but make it stiff enough once it dried to paint in place.

I checked out some designs with a quick google search, and modified a few images that I discovered.

I added some crushed glass, and even a few icicles with the Liquitex Gel Medium.  That works incredibly well for such an effect.  Much to my surprise!

Desert Rat

These Urban Mammoth Viridians were the perfect subject matter for the Painting Camo Patterns video.  Of course, I could not resist using some of them for the Desert pattern!

The base is made from baked sculpey clay.  I made the bricks individually first, and then 'weathered' them.  After that, I built up the wall brick by brick.

This post has some scenes from the video:
