Shades of Grey

Yes, more color theories!  This time, it was gray... and all the possibilities therein.

As I mention over and over in the video, gray is more than just black mixed with white!

You can do just about as much with grey as you can with more traditional colors.

The color swatches illustrated how to lighten a black with a variety of lighter colors, but also how to get that darker color without using black at all.

The shaded basecoat stage nearly complete...

And out came the glazes!  This is a great way to tint your gray colors.

Now we have a pair of Archangels!

Many thanks to John and the folks at Urban Mammoth for letting me use these ladies for the videos!

More to come!

Fly away...

Thundering hooves

The cavalry unit continues to grow!

Adding a few more to the unit, with some more on the way...

The line is starting to look more impressive!

Watch out with those pointy things!

Charge!

More to come.

A motley crew...

In another case of trying to keep myself from going insane (or more insane), I spent a few moments getting the Tomb Guard situated on their bases.  You have seen the original post on this movement tray:

But now it was time to magnetize the bases.  I re-learned that hard way that saving all these little chunks of refrigerator magnets would lead to a polarization issue...

So, I had all the bases magnetized...

As well as the unit filler.

However, when I put all the bases on, a few of them popped off, since there is a 'grain' to the refrigerator magnets!  Bummer!  They were super glued to the base, so pulling them off was not an option.  I was able to spin a few around, but I had to be sure that they would still physically fit into place.

I had to replace a few, which was a bummer.  You can see the renumbered and shaved down replacements in this image, as I started to put some of the Guard in place.  They are not being glued yet, since I want to be able to paint all the bases first!

The first row is done.  Some will be replaced by characters.  I am trying to intersperse old metal figs with the new plastics, as well as come conversions.

Building up around the sides of the movement tray...

Most of the rows completed, with some characters in position.  The three white figs are Reaper Bones minis from the kickstarter set!

There's a light beyond this tunnel

And it's not an oncoming train!

This is the Object source lighting video, as you can imagine.

Some of the fluorescent paints were used, which is always fun!!!

Getting brighter!  Even some glow on the base.

Side by side.

I love object source lighting.  The more the merrier!  It tends to lend the miniatures a sense of scale.  In other words, it makes them seem more 'full sized'.  It is very interesting how it does that.

So, I hope you will enjoy this video :-)

Wee little skinks

Well, it looks like these guys take quite a beating in the new Lizard book :-(

I am not quite sure what approach I will be using with them.  The previous post did mention small skrox units to house some chiefs to baby sit saurus.  Perhaps it could be another way of scattering vassals around for varieties of Mage Priests, or even Tette-eko.

I know that I would like to have one Trog... points probably will never allow for 2.  That's one way of getting a fast moving vassal that might not die off easily.  These skinks were part of that big Skink Tank which used to be a favorite unit in my army.  It had old metal javelin skinks, new plastic skinks, and conversions of plastic skink archers.

I also have noticed that lots of people are starting to see the potential that I saw in Kroak.  That will likely be my next theme and big sculpting project.

I sculpted him once years ago, and I think I could do something very neat this time around.  His palanquin will be quite elaborate, since he can't be shot at (no need to worry about LOS!).

Here are a few of those converted skinks.  These also became favorite minis!  I just can't bear the thought of abandoning my skinks completely.

I have some Sarus that I might convert to expand on the Temple Guard unit, which is very small right now.  Who knows, I might just do a 'Death Star' unit, which I have never tried.  That always seemed a bit boring to me, and hazardous.  All the eggs in one basket runs very contrary to my play style.

Hopefully I will be able to combine mobility with this, using Rippers, Trogs, Blastadons, and stegs to spread around that Ruination love!!

Raging Reds...

Some red goodies from Urban Mammoth!  These were very appropriate minis for a video all about reds.

Just as I did with all the other 'color theory' episodes, I did some swatches and value comparisons.  The key point here was to emphasize "warm vs cool" and "saturated vs unsaturated" colors.

Armed with that color chart, it was time to tackle the mini!

The shaded basecoat...

Uh oh, must be time to glaze!

Yes indeed, the color swatches were handy!

Speaking of reds, here is a different kind of color swatch.

Finis!

Three of a kind...

Some images of the three completed bikes together!!!

It is always fun to see these units build up like this :-)

I am still getting used to the idea of painting 'white', instead of some form of off white.

Where are you guys headed?  They're THAT way...

More on the way!
