Chaos Reigns

This is the largest scale piece that I have done so far, as 72mm.  I have done a few other figures in this scale, but they are not mounted on a giant steed!

This one is covered in freehand, as each of the 4 chaos gods are represented.  It is pretty obvious which one is featured in these views!

He is also on ebay at the moment:

On this side, you have the Slannesh and Tzeentch markings.  I have to say, it was nice to be able to do this kind of freehand on a much larger surface than the usual 28mm!  I felt like people would actually see all the subtle designs.

The penny gives you a sense of just how massive this is!

The entire base was scratch sculpted using Apoxy Sculpt, one of my favorite materials.  I did a number of base sculpting videos using that as part of the Painting Pyramid project.  There's forest basing, swamp, rocks, and more!

It has all of the advantages of milliput and green stuff, but none of the disadvantages.

Attack Dog

Day one of GenCon is now complete!

There was a lot of painting demo madness at both the Witchborn booth and at Badger airbrush.

Stop by booth #2861 to watch me do some wild painting demos!

I also have the videos with me on usb drives.

I have a pretty wide variety of figures prepped for tomorrow's demos too!

I'll be doing more 2D art demos with the airbrush at 503, so stop by there also. ;-)

Feral Assassin

Most of the wulfen style figures that I have done lately are less clothed than this character, so I ended up with a lot less fur to paint!

Still, there was a lot of action to the pose, and lots of things sticking out in the way of the brush :-)

I decided to go with a little bit of snow tufts, which also tempted me to put some snow on the ground.  Who knows... I might still do that! :-)

The Azure Sorceress

Since I had a few other "glowy" figures out on the table, I thought I would finish off this figure which had been started a long time ago as a possible test piece for the Object Source Lighting video.

Here's a link to the preview video:

As many of you know, this is one of the primary ways that I gain more efficiency in the painting process.  If I am working on something that involves the same skin color, armor, etc., I will try to cluster those together, even if they are not part of a specific unit from one manufacturer.

You can get the Object Source Lighting video, and many others in USB form here:

A bit of Powder

This figure was originally used for one of the Painting Pryamid videos that focused on using weathering powders for painting a figure, as opposed to just plain weathering.

Here's a link to a post that showed the process of the video.  What's interesting about using the powders is that all of the colors are going to be much more muted than regular paint.

It's not very easy, but with the use of rubbing alcohol to turn it into a 'paint', and the Secret Weapon fixer, the results were quite interesting!

Riding High!

Monster and rider together at last!!!

This massive beast is the Osprey that was used as the subject for one of the higher level Painting Pyramid instructional videos.

There are lots of examples of painted Eagles, so I thought this relative could be more interesting, with some very distinct markings.

It plays off the converted rider very well, with the sword arm in just the right position!

As I look at this, I start to realize just how much more in depth the Osprey markings were.

These views give a decent look at the rider, and how the flowing cloak and sword worked out!

A few close ups for you!

Up and Away!!

I thought that it might be a good idea to take some images of this rider figure before he's attached to the massive creature that the's riding into battle!

I know from many previous experiences that it can be very difficult to get any decent close ups on a rider once they are on the big creature.

It's even more important here, as this gal needed a lot of conversion.  The left arm with the sword is a leftover piece from a Raging Heroes kit.

I had to do some sculpting of armor on that arm to make it match (it was originally bare).

You can also see that I had a lot of fun with some freehand!!

These views show you a bit of the arm, and the sword.  This also let me carry the NMM effect all the way up to the shoulder.

The Osprey is already painted, just waiting for this rider.  Stay tuned!!!

Talon and Claw

Here's a figure that I painted as part of the Painting Pyramid video series.  It was one of several "large creature" videos that were created as stretch goals as things moved along.

I was able to add a few extra touches recently, such as the rider!

Also, I added foliage from Hangar 18 and Gamer's Grass.  The tufts came from Kings Hobbies and Games.

Those were elements that I wished were available to me years ago when this was first done.  It was worth the wait!!!

The yellow leaves meant that I could emphasize the yellows in the front talons more, since that color would be repeated (and hence balanced) by the leaves of a similar color.

The rider's very fragile standard was replaced by a very nice and sturdy Raging Heroes sword... one of those extra bits that you get in the metal kits which come in so handy!

I was also able to reflect many of the feather and fur shades in the armor.  I wanted that to be gold, but I also thought it would harmonize nicely with the reddish browns, umbers and ochres of the fur.

Who's There?

One more monster for you!!!

This is probably one of my favorites, as it is very different from what you normally see.

Not a phoenix, dragon, griffon, etc., but a big Snowy Owl!!

It is a challenge to paint it in all of those light colors, and get it to have variety in the shading, tones, etc.

I made an entire video of the painting process as part of the kickstarter campaign.

Here's how you put it together:

The base is also very fun!!
