Unboxing the Finecast Gwaihir

As I was clipping many pieces of resin from vents, gates and sprues, I thought I would get this guy in the mix as well.  I need a second eagle for my expanded LOTR Knights of the Blood Rose army.  While my original eagle will serve as Gwaihir, the Finecast version would be OK for that second 'regular'eagle.

The plastic eagles will be used when we do our really big 1000 point games. :-)

So, here is how it comes out of the box:

Everything clipped, scraped and filed.  Washed with dish soap as well!

Gluing the pieces into place, using the same glue/green stuff/glue technique...

As it is with all resin eagles (or anything with feathered wings for that matter), you will need to do some green stuff feathers to hide the joints.  I did pretty much the same kind of feather additions that I made on the CMON birds...

I mixed up some of the brown craft paint and some black primer to see how that would work.  it actually worked pretty well!  That's cool!  I don't think I will be able to do the painting on this until after our next journey...

  1. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one. I just painted up an Eagle and made a tutorial on Tale of painters. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but it might be interesting.

    Check it out.

  2. That looks really good, but I guess Im a little disappointed at how much 'joint hiding' you had to do for a Finecast model. Maybe Im expecting a little too much, but for the price you have to pay, id think they would put themselves together!

Needless to say though, you did a great job putting it together and the green stuff looks perfect.

    1. He he... the normal F-Cast figures I have gotten since that all started are unusable. This one is glorious by comparison :-)

    2. "Unuseable"... that has just about been my experience too...

    3. The thing that always gets me is that other much smaller companies can do so much better...

  3. Very nice. I'm not seeing many, if any, Finecast defects in the feathers. Is that an accurate assessment? If so, that's amazing!

    1. There are some...but shockingly few! Perhaps I might have gotten lucky this one time. :-)

  4. Very nice Finecast - BTW in Poland we call it FAILcast. I have to say that I'm surprised how well this Great Eagle is casted. On the other hand I'm disappointed how much green staff you had to use in order to put it together.

I'm waiting for the painted model :)
I would also appreciate if you could check your facebook or kickstarter "mailboxes" ;)

    2. Hehe... you are right.
In my opinion, old metal was the best. But the faincast must do for now.

    3. There are some companies that actually do resin right, such as Raging Heroes :-)
