Practice and experimentation

Last night was a bit of everything.  I was practicing the lava painting to see if I could learn some new tricks to put in the lava video.  I was trying to use less of the flourescent orange, emphasizing the mixing of magenta with standard yellow.

Also, it was the first time I used the Badger paints for more than a brush stroke on a palette.  I was testing the ghost tints in particular, so see if they would make good glazing colors.

Using the Badger paints with a brush was great, since they are already thinned down!  I didn't have to use flow improver at all, which was cool.

I only used the very dark ghost tint on this spider.  I will be trying out some of the other ones as this moves along.  It seemed as if there was a bit of shininess... but I need to test out more colors.

I chose this type of base for the lava painting, since it is the easiest base for a newcomer to base construction.  It is also a little easier to replicate over the course of a whole army, as I am doing with this spider/Morgul Knight LOTR force!  Stay tuned for more!

  2. Your lava fx just keep getting better! The ghost tints are like a candy coat for minis from what I can tell so that explains the shine. I bet they would really sing if you put them on over a metallic. I have ordered some to play with... I'd like to see if I can make them work for my alpha legion and make the blue to green colour modulation I currently do with glazes over metallics a bit easier with the help of my air brush (You'll know if it works or not by the volume of the scream when it fails).

    1. I have already started mixing those ghost tints with water and regular glazes to see what will happen. The time to paint the lava is being reduced with every base. These are subtle little things that cut down the time, but it really magnifies when you are doing a whole army!!

    2. I really respect you for that. I am seriously considering getting out of army painting. I don't play anymore and I just want to collect and paint cool minis. I guess the term would be cabinet painter. Really dragging my feet on my DV box set. I may have it done in time for 8th ed ;)

    3. I enjoy army painting for all the extra stuff that it allows me to delve into... such as writing the stories, coming up with color schemes that work on huge vehicles, monsters, and regular guys. The Dark Eldar are a prime example of making a freehand design work on lots of stuff!

  3. Please keep us appraised of your experiments with the Badger ghost tints... I'm always looking for easier ways to glaze. I find that it's especially difficult over metallic paints, and perhaps there's an easier medium to work with (or perhaps I just suck at glazing...). Right now, I'm using regular GW and PP paints, and trying to thin them down to a glaze consistency with either Vallejo matt medium and / or Vallejo glaze medium.

Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

    1. I hope what I come up with is useful for you, although I don't use metallic paints. What little I have done with them is to mix in the glaze with the metallic paint to begin with...
