Now for the news on the painting side of things. Asharah's Rage was able to secure two very cool awards, the first of which was Best Appearance! This is always a difficult thing to accomplish when there are over 250 armies in the room competing against you. :-)
As you can see, Adepticon does not skimp on prize support! Yes, that is a complete set of Badger airbrush paints. The Sanguinary Guard will go quite nicely with my Knights of the Broken Blade splinter chapter, which is the foil to the Dark Eldar army. Yea!
Then we have the second award, which was Player's Choice. I will say again, when you have that many painted armies on very ingenious display boards, getting this means a lot. Last year was a tie, so every vote mattered! Many thanks to everyone who did choose the Dark Eldar. It is much appreciated. There is far more meaning to these kinds of awards for me, since painting armies is what I am all about.
Yes, single minis are fun as well, but to make an entire army out of figures painted the way I would do a single figure is how I challenge myself. :-)
Once again, hefty prize support. More stuff for the Knights of the Broken Blade!
Thanks to all the folks who make events like this happen. Tons of volunteer hours, and so on...
Very good! Congrats, man! You definitely deserved it and I've read nothing but phenomenal reviews of your stuff in the blogosphere. Great job! Talk about kicking the bar up a notch...
ReplyDeleteYou more than deserved both, Jim! Well done, to you, and to everyone who recognized it!! :). Next year I hope to enter the 40K single as this time was the first I have missed in 4 years. Combat patrol and the bevy of seminars helped make up for it though :). Can't say that I'm not a touch jealous of the badger airbrush set :).
ReplyDeleteYou deserved BOTH, and I'm only sad I wasn't able to vote since I didn't play in the tourney. Tried to send everyone I could your way though!!
Much appreciated!!! The planning begins anew...
DeleteCongrats on the win. Though I find it hilarious that they give the person who wins "best painted army" a painting tutorial DVD as one of the prizes ...
ReplyDeleteI was trying to figure that one out myself...
DeleteVery well deserved! Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your journey from start to finish with your readers!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It really is a journey to be sure!
Deletewell done James. looks like your hard work has paid off.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't already (maybe I missed the photo on the blog somewhere) you really should take some group shots of your army in all of it's splendor
I tried to take a bunch of pictures of the army on the display board at the tourney, but they did not turn out well.
DeleteI am going to try something interesting later this week.
This involves shooting video of the board and the units, perhaps including some narration, etc. Doing it this way would also give me a chance to test out the microphone and the dubbing system for the painting videos!
I've got a bunch of pictures if the DE on my blog as of this morning, Jim :). Did my 40K picture dump this morning
DeleteThat's great! Will go check that out! :-)
DeleteWell deserved and even more amazing that the stuff you had an entire army of was top notch in the crystal brush as well! Your style stands alone in all the good ways. Can't wait to see how you create the magic in your videos!
ReplyDeleteThe best part was fine tuning all sorts of techniques that are going into the videos. I was able to field test all kinds of new materials, all of which should save people a lot of time and $$$$!
DeleteCongrats! Well deserved. Also, thank you for talking with me about the Tomb Kings board - I enjoyed it thoroughly.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you had some fun with that! I will be working hard to make something as entertaining!!!
DeleteJames, I felt like I had to seek out your blog and tell you how fantastic your army was at Adepticon. After my Ogre Kingdoms friend played you, he forced me to come over and look at every detail, and I was more than impressed and super happy that you won out, even over the Empire Ship (which was amazing). Congrats, and I will be a regular follower of your stuff from here on out.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for taking the time to look at the army and the blog! There are scores of posts on the Tomb Kings, so that might be a fun 'prequel' to seeing the army.
DeleteThose awards meant soooooo much to me. I was worried that all the tiny details would go unnoticed, but kind players like yourself took time away from reading the next scenario to check it out! :-)
Mr. Wappel,
ReplyDeleteI have not painted or gamed in over ten years. A friend of mine said that Adepticon would be a great way to get back into it.
I was walking around the 40k tournament room looking at all the miniatures.
I happened upon these stunning Dark Eldar. I liked the building quite a bit as well. The back of it made me wonder what was down the street and what the neighborhood was like! The geometric symbols on the bikes were really a fantastic touch and looked like something a Dark Eldar would adorn his bike with. It seemed that the barge on the ground level was not quite as bright as the bikes. Is that correct and if so, what is the reason for that?
I took pictures and mentioned to the other fellows that these miniatures were definitely the best in the room. They all agreed enthusiastically. Congrats on the win!
I have to admit that I had never heard of you before but I have been looking at your blog for awhile now. I regret missing the Kickstarter, so I look forward to your retail offering of the videos.
Sincerely,
Mark Morris

Many thanks for looking at the blog, and the army! It was really nice to finally see it all together for the first time myself!
DeleteThe painting videos should go 'public' some time in September, I think :-)
Congrats on the wins Jim. You always have amazing paint jobs. Good thing they gave you a "How To Paint" dvd. You'll definatly be using that. lol
ReplyDeleteThat was the strangest thing, I must admit! Even more ironic that the project that won the video was designed to be a testing ground for perfecting and adding to techniques in my videos :-)
