Touch this and you will get more than warts...

Time for another piece from the archive... a giant toad!  This was from Eastern Front Studios.

The base is a wooden plaque that is probably 6 inches across.

I think this is one of the first things I ever painted using my book of reptiles, amphibians and bugs as reference.  Eventually I would use it as a guide for all of my Lizardman army.

Since this was so huge, it let me choose a much more complicated pattern, which was fun!  You get a good look at that here.

I made the rocks, lilipads, etc., from sculpey.  Once that was baked and painted, I glued it to the wooden plaque.

My, what big teeth you have!

Close up of the base.  I painted several transparent layers on the 'water' part, using some gloss varnish in between each one.  This was faster and easier than trying to do it all with one of those water effects products.

  1. So much to love in this big ugly guy! Great work as always, particularly the "water" and lily pads. If and when you have time a tutorial on that technique would be most appreciated.

    1. Thanks! You can see techniques like that in the basing techniques section... mostly on Nurgle type stuff :-)

    2. Not that I don't believe you, but I just looked through all the posts tagged as "basing" and "nurgle" and didn't see any previous posts on how you achieved this effect. I found one with water effects and the dead horse...

    3. The techniques that I used on bases such as this is essentially the same idea... paint, some gloss medium over that, paint again, gloss over that. I don't have any exact step by steps on what I did with the frog, as that was many years ago.

This was done using that method:
